ARTIST STATEMENT:

“I am an acrylic painter who creates contemporary abstract imagery. Mine is a world of color, intuition and wonder. Drawing upon heart-felt memories and ordinary moments, I am inspired to create images that reflect these feelings.

Working through the searching process of layering, excavating and revealing, I create multi-layered paintings that evoke a sense of peace and beauty.  I start with a loose composition of shapes, transforming the piece through many stages.  Balancing the physical act of painting with creative decision-making, I incorporate mark making and strive to maintain the energy of my first efforts.  Staying true to these first efforts allows me to stay in touch with my most authentic work.

Some of the work on display at Art Direct is part of a body of work that included ponderous organic shapes drawn from memories of a languid afternoon on a rocky Maine beach. Smooth and well-worn by their time in the ocean, these rocks have a soft strength that I love to hold in my hands. The feel of the stones is soothing and their heaviness helps to ground me.

The imagery created from these memories has a softness and indeed a strength. Using soft shades, muted tones, juxtaposed with deep intense darks and even black, are blended to create a soothing, balanced visual. It has a subtle, yet powerful effect.  At times it has the feel of an old world still life or a landscape feel, at others it is more geometric and staid. Sometimes this imagery shows up as a soft cloud, with many layers. I am excited to see how this body of work continues to evolve.”
