CLARE WUELLNER - AVAILABLE ARTWORK

Hearts of the Forest
Framed Archival Print
33 x 18″
$525
Most of the images I use are captured in the Austin area, but this one is an exception.
My family visited the Carolinas last summer and the variety of leaf shapes was astonishing. Even within categories of leaf shapes, the variation in shape and color was just delicious! This is a collection of leaves that are all “heart-shaped.”
This work pairs with “Life Support” as a diptych.
I craft all images from an original photograph, then use framing, artistry, color, and dimension to draw the viewer into the story of the image.

The trees in my art have often been described as looking like coral, neural networks, bronchioles, or blood vessels.
It’s a fair comparison. The pattern of bifurcation is a super-efficient way to increase surface area exposed to oxygen, water, nutrients, or sunlight.
The similarity among these structures is also a reminder of how interdependent we are with trees. They do an excellent job of taking care of us. We need to make a better effort to take care of them.
A portion of the profits from the sale of this print will be donated to TreeFolks, an organization based in Austin whose mission is “to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
“I am a scientist by training and an artist at heart. Understanding science has amplified my wonder at the beauty of living things and this, in turn, informs my art. Artistry and imagination intertwine with my passion for living things to create images that will astonish you and change the way you look at the natural world.
My current project revolves around the architecture of trees. My work isn’t easy to categorize because I use photography and computer graphics to cultivate the viewer’s appreciation for trees from an Aesthetic, an Evolutionary and an Environmental perspective. My tree images have scope and depth that require space,
horizontal and vertical, so that every exquisite detail can fill the viewer’s senses with the spirit of the magnificent organism I honor in my art. My work requires a long, hard look. Every work has a story to tell about either the tree itself or the subject matter found within the branches. There is science, beauty, whimsy, and a whole lot of bold color.
The germ of each work is a photograph of a tree, which I enhance using a computer graphics program. With each modification I make to the photograph, the work speciates from the original capture and draws attention to something extraordinary about the tree. In some works, I emphasize the architecture of the tree. In others, I use the tree’s branches as outlines for the subject matter found in the negative space among the branches. Some show trees with the vibrancy that I see. All of them have stories.
I live in Austin with my better half and three nearly-fledged children in a house filled with love.”
