William Sullivan

In 2014 I was laid off from my job as a lead artist for a game company. It was then that that I become free to really concentrate on my painting. I have used photographs as reference for the last 30 years, but I have never aspired to be a photo-realist (super-realist, magic-realist, etc.). I am not interested in the obsessive detail that says more about the artist than it says about the subject. Even though I enjoy figure drawing and plein air painting, I simply do not want to be restricted to painting models in my studio or painting outdoors. My goal has never been to duplicate the photograph, but I find photographs to be a direct link to the time and place and people that I want to paint. I hope that other people viewing my work can have that same experience.
